What Is Fibre Optic Broadband?
Fibre optic broadband is an exciting new type of cable broadband that runs underground as opposed to traditional ADSL broadband that runs over ageing copper telephone wires. Fibre optic broadband is much faster than ADSL broadband and can offer broadband speeds up to 200Mbps - Making it the best option to satisfy our increasing demands for fast wireless broadband, online gaming, social networking and Internet TV like the BBC iPlayer.How Does Fibre Optic Broadband Work?
Unlike copper telephone wires, fibre optic broadband uses underground cables made up of inner glass or plastic that carry light signals. Using these materials as opposed to copper wire means less broadband speed is lost over long distances as information is sent and retrieved at the speed of light. This means super-fast broadband speeds can still be achieved in houses that are further away from their telephone exchange.Which Suppliers Offer Fibre Optic Broadband?
Virgin Media now has 100Mbps fibre optic broadband speeds available to around 13 million homes in the UK (half of all UK homes), with prices starting from just £12.75 a month. BT is building its fibre optic broadband network and has so far made its BT Infinity Broadband service (with up to 76Mbps download speeds and up to 19Mbps upload speeds), available to 7 million UK homes (as at April 2012).
