Carphone Warehouse owned AOL have today announced a £10 per month increase in their broadband tariffs for homes that are not served by an AOL LLU telephone exchange.
AOL local loop unbundling (LLU) is the process where AOL rents space and inserts its own equipment in a BT telephone exchange. By doing this ISP's like AOL can offer reduced broadband prices to people who's homes are served by such an exchange. However, for those homes not connected, the broadband prices are higher - as is also the case with Talk Talk's free broadband offering.
AOL's LLU covers 70% of UK households with further roll out likely as it looks to compete with other LLU providers. Broadband prices start from £14.99 a month in these areas. If you live in an area not served by an AOL unbundled exchange, you will have to pay an additional £5 a month for AOL Broadband Silver and an additional £10 a month for AOL Broadband Platinum.
In a separate move, new customers joining AOL Broadband will now have to sign up to an 18 month contract, extending the previous tie in period by 6 months.
