Sky To Launch 'Picnic' Broadband Only Packages

You are in: Home > Broadband News > Sky Broadband News > Sky To Launch 'Picnic' Broadband Only Packages

BSkyB, the UK's leading pay TV operator is preparing a further assault on the UK broadband market with the launch of broadband only packages called 'Picnic Broadband' which do not require customers to sign up a Sky TV package aswell.

Users will be able to choose from a range of packages with speeds up to 16Mb whilst also having the option of bundling in home phone calls and some of Sky's premium pay TV channels like Sky Movies. Prices are rumoured to start from £7.95 a month for broadband only.

Despite Sky being the UK's fastest growing broadband provider, it still has only a 3.5% share of the lucrative broadband market. A move to offer broadband only packages will appeal to the millions of Freeview customers not willing to pay for Sky TV channels, though it's expected that some will be tempted to pay for the likes of Sky Movies, Sky One and Sky Sports which, subject to Ofcom approval, will be available on terrestrial TV via Freeview.

Although Sky are unwilling to reveal any further details of the proposed launch, analyst predict Sky will launch their 'Picnic' venture in the New Year as a separate business that will take on the likes of TalkTalk, BT and Virgin Media.

Further information on the current Sky Broadband, Phone & TV packages can be found here.
