BE was set up as a privately-owned, independent ISP back in October 2004 and started trading in August 2005. It was the first UK broadband internet service provider to deliver download speeds up to a staggering 24Mb and upload speeds up to a record-breaking 2.5Mb. In June 2006, BE was acquired by O2 as part of the mobile phone firms plan to enter the broadband market. Today, BE still operates under the 'BE' brand and is widely known to operate the fastest ADSL broadband service in the UK. The company has won numerous 'best buy' awards including one recently from the consumer magazine Which?
BE provide an ADSL2+ broadband service through a process called local loop unbundling (LLU). This means that they rent space in a BT exchange, buy their own equipment, create their own backhaul network and connect BT’s copper ‘last mile’ network to your property. The BE Broadband service is available to 75% of UK homes where BE has unbundled the local BT exchange (i.e. put BE equipment in).
